Daily Devotional for Depression ~Day 2~

As I was researching and studying, God showed me several things that I was doing that was keeping me bound to my depression. One way I was sabotaging myself was the way I was thinking. Psalms 23:7 NKJV says, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he”. This pretty much sums it up, we actually are what we think we are. If we think we are victims, then we are victims. But, if we think we are overcomers, then we are overcomers.

Philippians 4:8

I have always had a problem with worrying and thinking negatively. I have to fight to be positive. I realized when I was researching my depression that, IT IS A FIGHT. I had to fight for my mind. Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things.”

One thing that really hit my spirit was when I read that King David encouraged himself in the Lord. 1 Samuel 30:6 KJV says, “And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.” I really started thinking about that. He didn’t need other people to build him up and encourage him. He didn’t need other’s advice or comments of affirmation. He built himself up in the Lord. He found his strength in the Lord. It couldn’t have been easy for him and It’s not easy for me to do, but it is possible. I know because I have done it and I continue to do it on a daily basis. 2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV tells us, “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets its-self up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

Think about your blessings, not your problems or flaws. Everybody has them and it does no good to dwell on them. Our flaws make us unique and our uniqueness is what God created in us before we were conceived. Jeremiah 1:5 NLT says, ” I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb…” Has anything ever gotten better by letting the bad thoughts control us? No! We must control our minds!
